FOR PRINTED NARRATIVE IMAGES
"The narrative images that I draw only exist at the moment of their printing. All of the above is only there to delay the moment when the image arrives. It was already true with screen printing, that the is even more with the pigment print Building the elements that will compose it, assembling them in a file studied for the print format, knowing that each file can be modified to give rise to variants, understanding that the preparatory drawings do not serve only to prolong the pleasure of waiting, imposes an obvious fact, the printed image is not the reproduction of a pre-existing work but the true original.Another pleasure is hidden behind, that of noting that all this time passed through the machine gives the image a narrative power that it could only find there, in the machine. The story arrives with the image. The verb was not at the beginning, it comes last to write the story dictated by the drawing. Fortunately, none of this has no sense, except to make an image that stands up and lasts a long time."
December 8, 2022, Pierre Clement
By proposing to Pierre Clément to use one of his old advertising images to make an offprint in his book OBJECTIF PUB, Alain Lachartre had no idea what was to come. The opportunity was too good, Pierre Clément changed everything and remade the Renault 5 campaign in an electric version in book format. As if that were not enough, the small format of the offprint opens the door to a 60x80 cm, FUTUR 5, which will be published in 8 copies by Galerie Collin. Between the two, the small and the big, the image changes, so does the story.
As in the series ARRÊT SUR HISTOIRE that he draws and writes every quarter for the magazine LES ARTS DESSINÉS, Pierre Clément finds history in drawing. If in the magazine, the image is on the right page and the text on the left, here, on the wall, it could only be outside the image.
Pierre Clément therefore decides to print the text separately on 8 cardboard boxes 24x16 cm, 1 per copy. On the front, 8 1/1 scale details taken in the 60x80, on the back, a single text written from the image, as many "certificates" printed by the designer with pigment inks on 400 gr watercolor paper.
Alain Lachartre, publisher and illustrator, has always worked around advertising and comics.
This beautiful large-format book presents the relationship between comics and advertising, from 1900 to today and is full of unpublished information. You will find in its pages all the authors of the gallery: Enki Bilal, Miles Hyman, Tardi, Juillard, Loustal, Schuiten... and many other famous names in comics and illustration!
Continuation of the story in large format in 60x80 cm available here
This edition also exists in 2 other versions: with a pigment print by Miles Hyman or Enki Bilal
