Miles Hyman

Biography

A Vermont native who attended The Buxton School before studying drawing and printmaking with David Schorr at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Hyman went on to attend the Paris Ecole des Beaux-arts. His first images appeared with French comics publisher Futuropolis in 1987.

Since then Hyman has enjoyed international recognition for his work as the author and illustrator of powerful and carefully-crafted graphic novels, including his adaptation of his grandmother Shirley Jackson's renowned short story "The Lottery" (Hill & Wang/Casterman, 2016) and The Prague Coup, a graphic novel retracing Graham Green's voyage to Vienna in 1948 to write The Third Man (with writer J-L Fromental, Dupuis, 2017). The monograph Miles Hyman/Drawings, featuring a selection of more than 200 of his finest works to date, was published by French publisher Glénat in 2015.

Museums throughout Europe have exhibited Hyman's work, including the Palais de Tokyo, The Glénat Foundation and the Musée de l'Illustration in Moulins, a 17th-Century architectural jewel located in the heart of France. This spring the internationally-renowned museum hosted a four-month retrospective of Hyman's work entitled "Miles Hyman: the Suspension of Time," a landmark solo exhibit that brought together some thirty years of artistic works in a show that met with wide critical acclaim.

Miles Hyman's award-winning drawings and paintings appear in books, magazines and galleries in the United States and Europe, with a list of clients that include The New Yorker Magazine, The New York Times, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Viking Press, Chronicle Books, Gallimard, Actes Sud, Futuropolis, Libération, GQ, Le Monde and Louis Vuitton. His work has been featured in galleries from New York and Los Angeles to Paris, Brussels, and Geneva, garnering awards of excellence from Creative Quarterly and Communication Arts among others.
